Our Work

Transmission Rights Modernization

March 2025

This white paper, sponsored by GridLab, explores the use of long-term firm transmission rights to deliver renewable energy to Pacific Northwest utilities. The paper proposes process and analytical reforms to improve utilization of existing transmission infrastructure and to broaden renewable development opportunities in the region.

Iterative Portfolio Optimization

December 2024

This white paper, part of GridLab’s Innovate Series, describes an iterative approach to identifying optimal portfolios that achieve resource adequacy and other complex constraints. The approach is demonstrated to identify several optimized zero emissions portfolios and to explore near-optimal solutions.

Building stable equilibriums for turbulent times

June 2025

As part of the Big Ideas From Around the West session at the Western Conference of Public Service Commissioners, Sylvan principal Elaine Hart shared some thoughts on planning and decision-making amidst turbulence in our industry. Check out her full remarks here.

Welcome, Jaxon!

May 2025

We are excited to welcome our first hire, Jaxon Stuhr, to the Sylvan Energy Analytics team! Jaxon's experience in load forecasting, resource planning, optimization modeling, and machine learning will help us continue to build out our technical capabilities and keep GridPath on the cutting edge. Can't wait to plug him into our ongoing projects and get started on some new initiatives!

West Coast Offshore Wind Transmission Study

January 2025

The Sylvan team helped researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory use GridPath to evaluate the resource adequacy contributions of West Coast offshore wind resources under various transmission configurations.

Introducing Sylvan Energy Analytics

September 2024

After more than a decade of collaboration, we are finally joining forces! The founders of Blue Marble Analytics and Moment Energy Insights are excited to introduce Sylvan Energy Analytics, a consulting and software shop focused on tackling today’s most pressing and complex clean energy planning challenges.

Regional coordination on resource adequacy

August 2024

Sylvan principal Elaine Hart presented to the Oregon Public Utility Commission on the value of regional coordination for resource adequacy, the difference between severe weather and “big” weather, and how planning reforms and market development can help the West realize the benefits of vast regional load and resource diversity.

GridLab Moonshot Study

August 2023

The Sylvan team (operating as Moment Energy Insights and Blue Marble Analytics) collaborated with GridLab, Telos Energy, Energy Futures Group, Evolved Energy Research, and UC San Diego on the Moonshot 100% Clean Electricity Study. The study identifies pathways to reliably achieve a 100% clean energy target across the Public Service Company of New Mexico system.

Resource Adequacy for a Decarbonized Future

November 2023

The Sylvan team (operating as Blue Marble Analytics and Moment Energy Insights) conducted the Western US Resource Adequacy Case Study in EPRI’s Resource Adequacy for a Decarbonized Future Report. The study explored the resource adequacy implications of highly renewable resource portfolios across the Western US, drew insights across a range of resource adequacy metrics, explored tradeoffs in key resource adequacy model parameters, and presented novel methods for modeling multiday energy storage in resource adequacy analyses.

GridPath RA Toolkit

October 2022

The Sylvan team (operating as Moment Energy Insights and Blue Marble Analytics) worked with GridLab to develop an open-source model and open dataset to conduct near-term resource adequacy analysis for the Western United States. The accompanying report delves into the value of regional coordination on resource adequacy planning and the importance of weather-coherent datasets for understanding resource adequacy challenges over large areas.
